Most Deville firebox grates have been modified and improved over the years. To avoid having to replace the entire firebox grate, a base frame was created that follows the perimeter of the firebox grate, along with two thicker half-grates that fit inside the frame. This way, in the event of future replacement, only the central grates (half-grates) will need to be changed, rather than the entire firebox grate as was previously the case.
